Los Angeles Animal Services is using behavioral euthanasia as a tool for population management. The labels on the kennel card no longer mean what they say. None of us — rescue, foster, volunteer, adopter — knows what to believe anymore. That ends now.

Zeus

Zeus

R4 · Rescued before scheduled death

Owner-surrender. No bite history. The intake form marked every reaction question friendly. R4'd at intake, before any out-of-kennel observation. The next morning, the Department's own staff wrote: "Easy to handle. Easy to muzzle. Allowed to be pet and scratched and did well." The R4 stood. A rescue group pulled him before his scheduled date.

Onyx

Onyx

R4 · Killed May 14, 2026

R4'd before the Department's own requested behavior assessment was even conducted. When the assessment came back four days later, it said Onyx was "able to work through handling issues if handler goes slow… sought out affection a couple times." A May 13 staff note: "This dog's behavior is improving." The R4 stood. Onyx was killed nine days after she arrived at the shelter.

Angel

R4 · Killed April 8, 2026

Owner-surrender, family relocation, three years of household experience. Three years of comfortable life with children and another dog at home. R4'd on a record that, by the Department's own admission in writing, cited "Intake" as the reason. Twelve days from available to dead.
